   Why I Care

Frida Brunzell for PUSD   Trustee Area B

I am running for PUSD School Board because I have two children in the district and thus have a vested interest in the success of our schools. My own family’s experience of education in PUSD has been varied: one of my children has been very successful, while another has been struggling because he did not get the early support and interventions that he needed, so I know what it is like to have different experiences in our schools and to want to make sure failures in the system are addressed, for the sake of all our children.

I believe in the importance of early identification of learning differences and evidence-based interventions, so that all children have the chance to be successful. When we correctly identify education needs early on, children do better because they can be quickly linked with the resources they require, while teachers face less distractions in the classroom – in this way everyone wins.

Our schools must be better at recognizing and supporting the mental health needs of students. Without this, students risk depression, anxiety, academic failure, possibly becoming involved with bullying or even drug use. I know this from my own family’s experience. My belief is that when individual students have what they need in terms of access to instruction and support (including and especially social emotional support), we are setting them up for success and we can seriously reduce these risks.

I am running because I believe that it is important that we keep the education, safety and well-being of each student at the forefront of our decisions. I believe that a lot of parents in America worry about the safety of their children in school with instances of gun violence. Keeping our children safe while on campus extends beyond intruder drills (which can also be traumatizing), to upgrading our campuses with real security measures.

I am running because I want to ensure financial responsibility through fair bidding processes, effective resources allocation, and data-driven decision making. Our hard-earned taxpayer dollars must be used respectfully and without waste. I believe my professional background as a process engineer makes me uniquely qualified to provide this oversight; I am well-practiced in analyzing and using data to make sound decisions. I do not simply believe what I am told, without first seeing the evidence. All families in our district work hard, and I will use these skills to ensure our tax dollars are being effectively spent.

It would be an honor to serve on the PUSD school board and I appreciate your support!
