Frida Brunzell
for PUSD

  Trustee Area B

Dedication with a Difference

I am Frida Brunzell and I am running for PUSD Board of Education Trustee Area B.  I am the proud parent of three children, two attending PUSD high and elementary schools and the oldest attending UCLA.  I am a dedicated volunteer and student advocate.  I am optimistic about the future of our school community.

I recently completed two terms as PTA President for Palomar Council where I oversaw 29 PTAs within Poway Unified. As Council President, I worked closely with each and every PTA within the district. I value all schools, their students, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators.  I served on many PTA boards, as well as on a foundation board. I also served full terms on several of PUSD's committees, including the Community Advisory Committee for Special Education and the English Learner Advisory Committee.

I am a fierce advocate for children, having spoken out on issues at all levels - individual school, district, county and state. My successes include improved, evidence-based reading curriculums, creating safer school parking lots, and advocating for increased funding for education.

I am passionate about ensuring that every child gets a high-quality education. I embrace PTA’s values, which focus on advocacy for all children, collaboration, ensuring diversity, respect, and accountability.
My priorities as a school board trustee will be:

I) Literacy for All
One in four students in PUSD is not proficient in reading. Reading skills are crucial for academic success and everyday life. Every student deserves the opportunity to read well and enjoy reading.

In pursuit of this goal, I will continue to advocate for children with learning differences by ensuring early identification and evidence-based programs are well integrated into our schools.

II) Mental Health & Bullying
We all know transitioning from isolation during the pandemic to life on campus has led to increased mental health challenges.  I will work to ensure all students who need support have access to adequate mental health support. Doing so will set more students on a path to success, avoiding the pitfalls of anxiety, academic failure and worse.

I will work to implement a strong response to bullying. The district needs a better plan that promotes easy and safe reporting, communicates with the victim’s family, and provides evidence-based behavioral interventions for repeat offenses. We also need to improve training for teachers and staff in recognizing bullying when it occurs in the classroom.

III) Financial Priorities and Accountability
PUSD spends millions each school year on litigation.  I will work to provide accountability to taxpayers and to ensure our education funds are used in the most effective way possible. These funds should be reallocated toward smaller class sizes and enhanced curriculum. Our tax money should go toward education, not lawsuits.
